How are accented letters and Y handled?

FAQsName numbers1 min read
AT A GLANCE

The rule depends on the system. An A to Z chart alone does not explain how Ä, É, or other characters are converted. Y can also be treated differently when separating vowels from consonants.

Make the assumption visible

Record both the original spelling and the letters actually used in the calculation. Converting one character into one letter or two can change the total.

When the rule is unclear

Look for the calculator's documented normalization method. Without it, a discrepancy cannot be explained precisely. This guide does not invent a universal NUMEIQ rule for these cases.

Calculation and method

The expression method described here uses your full birth name, including all given names and your surname at birth. A nickname or a later name is a different input. To compare results, record the exact spelling and the handling of special characters.
