Reduction

GlossaryLife path numbers1 min read
AT A GLANCE

The process of adding the digits of a result again until a stated endpoint is reached. Numerology usually uses a base number, with some methods retaining master numbers.

An example

38 first becomes 3 + 8 = 11. Without an exception, 1 + 1 then gives 2. An explicit master number rule may stop the process earlier.

What the term does not mean

Digit sum refers to one addition. Reduction describes the repeated procedure and its stopping rule. The distinction helps explain differences between calculators.

Calculation and method

Use the day, month, and full birth year. For April 12, 1990, the digits add up to 1 + 2 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 26. Then 2 + 6 = 8. This example illustrates basic reduction. Master number cases also depend on the stated stopping rule.
